Ghana Museums celebrate International Museum Day with free access for students

In celebration of International Museum Day, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Ghana are shining a spotlight on the vital role museums play in preserving cultural identity and fostering development in an era of rapid change.

Observed annually on 18 May, this year’s International Museum Day carries the theme: “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.”

The theme highlights the growing importance of museums as cultural anchors in a world being reshaped by technological advances, climate change, and social transformation.

A statement released by GMMB emphasized the alignment of this year’s theme with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — specifically SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

“Museums support local economies by creating employment opportunities and empowering people with knowledge,” the statement read. “They foster creativity and embrace technological advancement while acting as cultural hubs that promote heritage preservation and sustainable development.”

In Ghana, museums have long served as custodians of history, including colonial legacies and indigenous culture. The establishment of the National Museum by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1957 was a pivotal step toward shaping national identity and unity in the post-independence era.

However, the GMMB lamented the lack of full institutional empowerment to realize the founding vision of the National Museum, calling for stronger governmental support to enhance its operations and reach.

Despite these constraints, the Board has consistently engaged the public through educational initiatives and community outreach. As part of this year’s celebrations, the National Museum is offering free admission to all basic and senior high school students from 18 May to 25 May 2025. The goal is to cultivate interest among Ghana’s youth in history, culture, and heritage.

“We urge all Ghanaians to patronize museums for cultural reorientation and resetting,” the GMMB urged. “To all staff of museums in Ghana, we say Ayekoo.”

The GMMB also used the occasion to call on the government to provide increased support to the National Museum, reinforcing its role as a critical institution for nation-building and historical education.

For more information, the public can contact the GMMB’s Acting Executive Director at 0244741678 or reach out to the Public Relations office at 0245185088 / 0243459659 / 0303944028.
