The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and the EU-funded Enhanced Maritime Action in the Gulf of Guinea (ENMAR) organised a conference to inspire young women and girls to explore careers in maritime security and safety.
The event brought together senior women professionals from Ghana and beyond to discuss career challenges, success stories, and best practices in the industry.
A field visit to the Port of Tema is scheduled for 13 March to give participants a first-hand look at career opportunities in the maritime sector.
Speaking at the conference, Major General Richard Addo Gyane of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre highlighted the significant challenges women face in the ports and maritime industry.
He cited issues such as discrimination, exclusion from decision-making, and unsafe working conditions due to deep-rooted gender biases.
“From the navy to the ports, maritime, trading, and fishing industries, women face multiple challenges including discrimination in certain roles, low representation in decision-making, sexual harassment, and hazardous work environments,” he said.
Marie Gibrat, Head of Project for ENMAR, underscored the maritime sector’s importance to Ghana’s economy and stressed the need for better security measures to ensure women can fully contribute their skills.
“Women’s contribution to maritime security is essential. You cannot work towards securing a space without including the entire population. Women bring unique perspectives and valuable skills to the industry,” she noted.
Commander Faustina Anokye, the highest-ranked female officer in the Ghana Navy, encouraged young women to consider careers in maritime, assuring them that opportunities exist despite the industry’s male dominance.
“The military is not for everyone; it’s for those who meet the requirements and have the passion to join. But it’s open to all, and there are flexible terms to support women in the sector,” she said.
