A deputy minister of trade and industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, has said industries in Ghana and the government had vigorously invested in innovative technology to enhance supply chain efficiency and maintain competitiveness.
Okyere Baafi said Ghana was one of Africa’s leading trade and logistics hubs and had achieved encouraging success in this sector due to its unique geographical location, efficient infrastructure and well-trained and highly skilled workforce.
The deputy minister was speaking at the maiden sustainable supply chain summit of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Africa in Accra on Wednesday (29 March) under the theme “Sustainable Supply Chain for Economic Growth in Africa”.
He said, international trade involves a network of global logistics operators, who deal with functions such as ocean shipping, air freight, land transport, warehousing and third-party logistics, adding that domestically, the country “needs to make it easy and affordable for traders to connect to logistics networks on the continent, especially with the introduction of the Pan African Payment System (PAPPS).”
“Ghana is one of Africa’s leading trade and logistics hubs. We have achieved encouraging success in this sector due to our unique geographical location, efficient infrastructure and well-trained and highly qualified workforce.”
“This success cannot be sustained if we are not connected to efficient supply chains on the continent. With our collective effort on the continent, we can surely identify areas where we can do better to sustain supply chains for economic growth,” the deputy minister said.
The secretary-general of the ICC Ghana, Emmanuel Doni-Kwame said supply chain is key hence the need for the two-day summit.

He stated that the summit will be an annual event to keep track of the progress being made on the continent as far as supply chain is concerned.
Doni-Kwame urged young entrepreneurs to be innovative and create things that are needed in the area of trade on the continent.
He said, “The outcome of this summit will be reviewed and then we make sure the issues that come up, we make the necessary advocacy to make sure it’s implemented”.
The two-day summit will serve as an annual platform to exchange ideas and collaborate on the impact of market dynamics and new technologies for current and future supply chain and operations leaders.
This maiden event created an opportunity to examine how to navigate supply chain disruptions within the AfCFTA as well as how sustainable supply chain management, advanced technologies, process improvement and automation are being rolled out and can be leveraged in Africa.
