The Ghana Kidney Association has commended the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) over the decision to provide kidney patients aged below 18 and those above 60 years all eight dialysis sessions per month for free under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) effective 1 June to December 2024.
Parliament in March approved GHC6.87 billion for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) to cover health insurance claims and other activities for the year.
This approval included, for the first time, emergency support for needy dialysis patients as part of the 2024 distribution formula.
About GHC2 million out of the amount has been allocated for the dialysis treatment of kidney patients in some public health facilities.
A statement issued by the Association on Tuesday(4 June) called on NHIA to ensure the payment for the services is not fraught with delay.
“Ghana Kidney Association has learned with great delight, government’s decision to offer some support to patients receiving dialysis treatment as part of their renal care, albeit on a short term. It is particularly satisfying to learn of the 100% support being offered for children (under 18 years) and those aged 60 years and above.”
“It is our expectation that the reimbursement for the services shall be prompt and not fraught with undue delays that have characterized some NHIA for this gesture,” the GKA statement said.
