Ghana-Israel ties strong, but Gaza war remains a humanitarian tragedy – Roey Gilad

Roey Gilad/Ghana-Israel/Hamas/Gaza

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has confirmed the existence of military cooperation between Ghana and Israel, though details remain confidential due to security reasons.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Gilad said both countries share mutual concerns about regional and domestic security, describing the relationship as “significant.”

“For obvious reasons, this is not something that we speak about publicly. Let me just say that the security of Ghana is extremely important to Israel, as is the security of Israel to Ghana,” he said.

On the conflict in Gaza, Gilad defended Israel’s continued military response, maintaining that the country retains the moral high ground in its actions despite global criticism over the high civilian death toll.

He referenced the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, which he described as a turning point, saying the group’s stated mission is to destroy the Israeli state.

“We were attacked by a terror group… unless we bring them down or disarm them, this threat will chase us day in and day out,” Gilad said.

Addressing the humanitarian toll in Gaza, he acknowledged the tragedy but attributed the escalation to Hamas’s use of civilians as human shields.

“We believe around 25,000 activists are hiding behind the civil population,” he noted. “Trying to rout a terror organisation that is abusing civilians in this way comes at a cost. This is what is referred to as collateral damage.”

Gilad pointed to similar challenges faced by the US and UK in past conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and insisted that the question of moral responsibility must be directed at Hamas.

He stated that both Israelis and Palestinians are suffering in the conflict and reiterated calls for Hamas to lay down its weapons, stating that peace is impossible until the group ceases its armed operations.

“There are still 55 Israelis being held in Gaza. The situation is a tragedy for both sides, but it can only end when Hamas ends its aggression,” he said.
