Ghana GoldBod opens application for aggregator and buyer licenses

The categories open for application include aggregator licenses, self-financing aggregator licenses, and tier 1 and tier 2 buyer licenses

Ghana’s newly established Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially begun licensing service providers in the gold trading sector as part of efforts to regulate and restructure the industry.

In a statement issued Wednesday (23 April), the GoldBod announced that Ghanaian individuals aged 18 and above, as well as fully Ghanaian-owned companies, are now eligible to apply for licenses either online or at the agency’s head office in Accra.

The categories open for application include aggregator licenses, self-financing aggregator licenses, and tier 1 and tier 2 buyer licenses. Other licenses covering refining, smelting, storage, transport, and importation are expected to be available by July 2025.

The move comes as part of a broader regulatory framework under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140), aimed at sanitizing the gold trading space and boosting domestic revenue.

The Board also reiterated a firm directive for all foreign nationals to exit the local gold trading market by April 30. According to the statement, any foreigner found violating the order risks legal sanctions. However, foreigners may apply to off-take gold directly from the GoldBod under specific arrangements.

In addition, the GoldBod reminded all traders to conduct transactions based on the official Bank of Ghana reference rate, in accordance with earlier directives.

Officials say the new licensing regime is central to the Board’s mandate to oversee, streamline, and optimize Ghana’s gold trading sector for national development.
