Ghana set to reopen Washington DC Embassy after diplomatic and IT reforms

Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC
Accra, May 27, 2025 — The Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC is set to reopen on Thursday, May 29, 2025, following months of closure prompted by operational irregularities and internal reforms, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
According to a press release issued today, the embassy was temporarily closed due to the recall of Home-Based Staff and the suspension of Local Staff, following reports of structural inefficiencies and concerns over integrity in the embassy’s operations.
In response, a new team of seasoned diplomats, led by a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, has been deployed to oversee the overhaul of systems and implement reforms aimed at restoring full functionality and transparency.
IT System Overhaul and Website Reconfiguration
The Ministry also disclosed that an Information Technology (IT) team has already been deployed to revamp the embassy’s digital infrastructure. The IT overhaul includes the reconfiguration of the embassy’s website and online payment platforms, aimed at eliminating unofficial and unauthorized digital links that previously compromised operational integrity.
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
In a clear indication of the government’s stance on the issue, the Ministry confirmed that the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General have been notified of the circumstances that led to the embassy’s closure. The matter has been referred for further investigations and potential sanctions.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes this opportunity to reassure of its commitment to enhancing service delivery to the public, safeguarding transparency and accountability, and protecting Ghana’s esteemed image in the comity of nations,” the statement added.
Contact and Inquiries
The Ministry has provided the following channels for inquiries regarding the reopening:
•Email: washington@mfa.gov.gh | ipab@mfa.gov.gh
•Phone (US): +1 202 686 4520
•Phone (Ghana): +233 240 793 072
The public has been assured that necessary measures have been put in place to address all pending issues and backlogs.
