Ghana declares 1 July as National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving
The announcement was made during the inauguration of a national planning committee tasked with coordinating the event, which the president described as a call for national unity and spiritual reflection

President, John Mahama, has officially declared 1 July — previously observed as Republic Day — as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, marking a shift in the country’s approach to commemorating the date.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of a national planning committee tasked with coordinating the event, which the president described as a call for national unity and spiritual reflection.
“Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists—we worship differently, but we work together as one people,” President Mahama said, citing the need to formally acknowledge Ghana’s enduring religious harmony. “In a world where religion often divides, in Ghana, we shine as an example of unity in diversity.”
To reinforce his message, the president referenced both the Qur’an and the Bible, quoting Sura Al-Hujurat 49:13 and Romans 12:18 to underscore the importance of peaceful coexistence.
The new observance, he explained, is meant to foster gratitude and collective spirituality, while promoting the values of peace and tolerance that have helped sustain the country’s stability.
The newly formed committee, chaired by former minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has been charged with organising the inaugural event. Afriyie Ankrah pledged an inclusive process that reflects the country’s diversity, saying the day would become more than a mere ceremony.
“We will engage broadly across all regions, faiths, and backgrounds,” he said, adding that the aim is to create a meaningful spiritual tradition that uplifts the nation’s consciousness and gratitude.
The committee also expressed hope that Ghana’s example would inspire other nations navigating religious divisions.
