Ghana has condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, calling it an “unconstitutional act” that threatens democratic order in the West African nation.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Accra said it was “profoundly concerned” by the coup carried out by sections of the Guinea-Bissau military, only days after the country held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on 23 November.
Ghana said the action “disrupts the electoral process” and undermines the democratic will of the people, with the announcement of official results – expected on 27 November – now in doubt.
The government urged all parties to use “peaceful, transparent and lawful” means to address any electoral disputes, insisting that constitutional rule must be restored without delay.
Special concern was raised for members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission stationed in Guinea-Bissau.
Ghana stressed that their safety and freedom of movement must be guaranteed as regional bodies assess the unfolding crisis.
The statement also appealed for calm among citizens of Guinea-Bissau, warning against actions that could deepen tensions.
Ghana reaffirmed its support for ECOWAS and the African Union as both organisations move to coordinate a regional response.
It emphasised the need to uphold long-standing continental protocols promoting democracy, good governance and constitutional rule.
