Ghana at the 13th African Games: A mixed bag of results so far

Team Ghana has secured four medals in the competition so far, with Abeiku Jackson and Winnifred Ntumi being the standouts

The 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, have been a whirlwind of athletic competition. But for the host nation, the opening week has not been without its setbacks.

Despite table tennis matches offering 28 medals kicking off on Monday (4 March), Ghana’s Black Loopers team could not secure any. Their closest call was in the women’s team quarterfinals, where Celia Baah-Danso was on the verge of clinching bronze for Ghana, needing just one more game victory.

But a determined South African opponent, Musfiquh Kalam, staged a dramatic comeback from 2-1 down to win 3-2 and secure the bronze medal for her nation. Similarly, Ghana’s badminton and Karate-Do teams exited early without medals.

The men’s football team, the Black Satellites, opened their campaign with a draw against Congo, while the Women’s Football team, the Black Princesses, opened their account with a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia, but the highlight came from Abeiku Jackson’s silver medal in the Men’s 50m Butterfly swimming event.

Harry Stacey narrowly missed a bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle, and Ghana finished just outside the medals in both the 4x100m Free Relay Mixed and 4x100m Medley Relay Mixed.

Winnifred Ntumi, the 2022 Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) Sportswoman of the Year, delivered Ghana’s first gold medal of the Games in the Women’s Weightlifting Competition, Cat. 49kg, adding two silver medals in the Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories.

Ghana still has a chance to add to their medal tally, with the Games set to run until 23 March.
