Togbe Afede: I returned ex-gratia because I didn’t deserve it

Togbe Afede XIV said he never took any transport allowance while serving as a member of the state advisory body

The Agbogbomefia, Togbe Afede XIV of the Asogli State, has said he returned the over GHC300,000.00 ex-gratia paid to him as a council of state member because he did not merit it, looking at the economic situation of Ghana.

“I returned the ex-gratia amount I was paid not because I didn’t need the money,” the paramount chief of the Asogli State said at the youth empowerment and anti-corruption day celebration on Saturday (20 August).

In fact, at that particular time, I needed money very badly to meet various family obligations. But I truly believe that the money was not deserved. It was inappropriate. I will emphasise again, it was essentially part-time work.”

Togbe Afede XIV said he never took any transport allowance while serving as a member of the state advisory body.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me emphasise that I was one of the most active participants at the Council of State and, secondly, I registered as a resident of Accra and never had any transport allowance.”

The return of the ex-gratia sparked mixed reactions in June this year.

The traditional leader said: “As to whether I’ll do it again, yes I’ll do it again because the country is a very poor country, so those who sacrifice or who have offered voluntarily to work for this country must be very considerate.”
