The Government of Ghana has issued a sweeping directive requiring all mining machinery to be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) by 1 August 2025.
The directive is part of a renewed crackdown on illegal mining activities and environmental degradation.
In a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government warned that any unregistered equipment found after the deadline will be seized by the state without exception.
“This directive forms part of comprehensive efforts to reform the mining sector and improve internal security,” the statement said.
From 2 August, both the Ghana Police Service and the DVLA will begin full-scale enforcement of the new measure, officials confirmed.
The announcement comes amid mounting concern over the unregulated use of heavy-duty machinery in illegal mining operations — known locally as galamsey — which has been blamed for widespread destruction of forests, farmlands and water bodies across the country.
Authorities say the registration process will help establish clear lines of accountability and enable the tracking of machinery often used in unlawful or environmentally harmful operations.
“This is part of a broader national reset agenda to tackle illegal mining and enhance traceability in the sector,” the Interior Ministry said.
Operators and owners of mining equipment have been urged to comply with the new rules ahead of the deadline or face serious consequences.
“The Ministry of the Interior remains committed to ensuring internal security and the maintenance of law and order in the country,” the statement added.
