GAF recruitment resumes today with tightened safety measures after deadly El-Wak stampede

Recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to resume today, Thursday, 20 November 2025, after a temporary suspension of the exercise in the Greater Accra Region following the tragic stampede that claimed six lives at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on 12 November.

The deadly incident prompted President John Dramani Mahama to order an immediate halt to the process while the military reviewed and strengthened its safety protocols.

Five Screening Centres, Strict Daily Limits Introduced
Ahead of today’s resumption, the GAF has announced a series of new measures designed to prevent overcrowding and ensure an orderly recruitment process.

According to the Director-General of Public Affairs, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the Armed Forces have now established five separate screening centres to ease congestion and manage applicant queues more effectively.

She disclosed that for the first time, the military will strictly cap the number of applicants allowed into El-Wak each day.

“The numbers that will be at El-Wak will not be more than 1,200. This is because we are going to have two groups there, each made up of 600 potential recruits,” Captain Arhin said.

Screening to Run for At Least Five Days
The GAF spokesperson explained that the recruitment will be conducted in phases, beginning with verification of applicant information and physical body checks. She added that the screening process is expected to last a minimum of five days, though it may extend depending on the pace of verification and applicant turnout.

“The screening is in phases, and this is phase one, where we verify their information and do the body checks,” she noted.

Reassurance After Tragedy
The Armed Forces have assured the public that the revamped process prioritises safety above all else, with additional personnel, crowd-control systems, and logistical reinforcements deployed across the identified centres.

The November 12 stampede drew widespread national grief and raised concerns about recruitment management, prompting calls for reforms. With the new arrangements in place, the GAF says it is committed to protecting applicants while continuing its nationwide recruitment.

The resumption today will serve as the first major test of the new measures.
