The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) raided Walewale, destroying motorbikes and vehicles parked in designated areas. The incident occurred around 1 PM on 26 January 2026.
The reason behind the military’s action is not clear; they were seen pushing motorbikes from bus stops and other areas and slashed vehicle tyres, immobilizing them.
The North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, said he was not informed about the operation. Ibrahim said he got the information about the exercise and quickly called the military captain in Gambaga, who said the instruction came from their superior.
“I was not informed about any military exercise in the region,” he said. The minister expressed unhappiness about the attack, saying the people didn’t deserve it.
Sources say the military personnel were from the Upper East Region, Bolgatanga, without the notice of the regional minister and the MCE for West Mamprusi.
It is also alleged that the military acted on intelligence that residents of Mamprugu had planned to block the main road because of the 15th Bawku Naaba court case at the high court in Accra.
