Savannah Region plants trees to mark World Tourism Day
The day highlights the significance of tourism in fostering cultural exchange, economic growth, and sustainable development
World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September every year across the world and in Ghana’s Savannah Region, this year’s edition was marked by tree planting.
The day highlights the significance of tourism in fostering cultural exchange, economic growth, and sustainable development.
It also encourages people worldwide to explore the beauty and diversity of the planet while recognising the responsibilities that come with it.
The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism and Green Investments.”
In light of this theme, the Savannah regional director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Isaac Opirah, said the celebration of the day is a call for innovative ideas and solutions, not just the traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity.
He added that the theme is also a call to action for the international community, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy to ensure the sustainability of the planet, create opportunities for people, and also deliver inclusive prosperity through innovation and entrepreneurship.
“In the Savannah Region, we are embarking upon tree planting along the major Tamale road and our office premises to commemorate the day,” Opirah said.
Creating awareness of the day by the regional GTA office, he noted that “we believe that tourism has enormous socioeconomic, political, and environmental benefits. Therefore, if it is harnessed and the message gets to the people, it will involve everyone.”
He said about 8,000 to 10,000 tourists visit the Savannah Region quarterly. He expressed concern about a few hotel owners who are not complying with the standards of the authority.
