President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the transformative potential of innovation and technology in Ghana’s agricultural sector, describing it as a critical driver of economic growth and national prosperity.
Speaking as the special guest at the opening of the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026, themed “Transforming Agribusiness through Local Innovation and Technology,” President Mahama said the fair serves not only as an exhibition of machinery and technology but also as a platform connecting ideas, research, enterprise, and investment.
“Events such as this do more than just showcase machinery and technology; they connect ideas to enterprise, research to industry, and innovation to investment. In doing so, they help to transform agriculture from a sector of survival to a sector of opportunity, productivity, and national prosperity,” he stated.
The President highlighted that across Africa, agriculture is often narrowly viewed as subsistence farming. He stressed the need to see the sector in a broader economic context, encompassing productivity, value addition, industrial development, job creation, exports, and technological advancement.
“This fair reminds us that the future of agriculture lies not simply in expanding acreage but in modernising the entire agriculture value chain—from the farm to the factory, from production to processing, from logistics to packaging, and global marketing,” President Mahama said.
He commended the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, the Ghana Exports-Import Bank, and other partner institutions for organising the fair, describing it as a vital platform for promoting agricultural technology and agribusiness development in Ghana.
Observers note that initiatives such as the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026 could play a key role in shifting the country’s agriculture from subsistence practices to a technology-driven, commercially oriented sector capable of boosting economic growth and national development.
