From defeat to strategy: NPP conference to push reforms and reconciliation

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to host its National Delegates Conference on Saturday, party stalwart and National Council member Nana Akomea has described the gathering as a critical moment for unity, reflection, and reform following the party’s resounding defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (18 July), Akomea said the conference, which will host over 6,000 delegates at the University of Ghana Stadium, will be the party’s first major assembly after losing both the presidency and a significant number of parliamentary seats.

“This is the delegates’ conference of a devastated party,” he said. “But it is also an opportunity for solidarity, healing, and recommitment.”

Although a court injunction reportedly hangs over the conference, Akomea indicated that the party’s legal team is still evaluating its impact, and no decision has yet been communicated about a possible postponement.

Beyond symbolic unity, the conference is also expected to address substantive internal reforms. Akomea revealed that over 50 proposed constitutional amendments are on the table for deliberation and possible adoption by delegates.

He emphasised that Saturday’s speeches—featuring key party leaders and solidarity messages from both current and former officials—will be anchored on rallying the grassroots. “We’ve been here before,” Akomea noted, recalling the party’s 1993 opposition era when the NPP rose from just a third of parliament and 38% of presidential votes to winning the 2000 elections. “This defeat is not the end,” he said. “Working together, we can rebuild.”

He urged delegates to return to their constituencies renewed and hopeful: “Let’s go back with confidence in our hearts, knowing that rebuilding is possible.”

Akomea concluded with a plea for decorum, saying, “The eyes of the nation are on the NPP this weekend. Let’s show maturity and unity.”
