Ghanaian stand-up comedian and content creator Jephter Opoku has recounted his transition from the corporate world into full-time comedy, describing the move as a risky but necessary step toward self-discovery and creative fulfillment.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (9 January), Opoku said although he trained in IT education and undertook professional courses in cybersecurity, comedy had always been part of his identity from childhood through his church, junior high school and senior high school years.
“I’ve always been that actor, that funny guy,” he said, explaining that his upbringing in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) tradition and participation in church drama groups helped shape his performance instincts.
Opoku disclosed that after completing university and national service, he worked briefly in a corporate environment but later resigned to focus fully on comedy.
“When I resigned and paid attention to comedy fully, that was when I started discovering myself properly,” he said. “Now when I wake up, everything is comedy.”
He traced his early breakthrough to a viral classroom skit produced with a group, which gained traction online and made him recognisable on campus and beyond. According to him, unemployment after university further sharpened his creativity.
“When you’re hungry, you become very smart,” he said, noting that hardship pushed him to treat comedy not just as entertainment but as a survival skill.
Opoku, a native of Kasoa, said his work increasingly draws from real-life experiences, family stories and everyday Ghanaian struggles, adding that authenticity remains central to his craft.
Despite initial disappointment from family members who expected a more conventional career path, he said his decision to pursue comedy full-time has strengthened his confidence and sense of purpose.
“This is not just fun. It’s a craft,” he stressed.
