Asaase Broadcasting Company is investigating claims of illegal mining (galamsey) activities, said to have been happening in the backyard of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s private residence in Kyebi, in the Eastern Region.
The former environment minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng alleged, in a report to the Office of the President dated 19 March 2021, leaked last month, that certain government officials are involved in illegal mining.
However, the Abuakwa South constituency leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded an immediate apology from Professor Frimpong-Boateng, who was also the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining.
The Kyebi Traditional Council has also denied Frimpong-Boateng’s claim.
Speaking about the leaked report, the chief of Kyebi, Osabarima Marfo Kwabre, said it is untrue. He called on Professor Frimpong-Boateng to retract and apologise.
