Free TVET policy takes off next academic calendar, says Bawumia

This means from the next academic year all qualified graduates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination will now benefit from free tuition

The implementation of Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) will begin from the next academic calendar this year, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said.

This means from the next academic year all qualified graduates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will now benefit from free tuition.

It comes barely a year after government extended the  Free Senior High School education programme to cover some 139 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country.

The vice-president said government is retooling existing technical training institutions for the take off of the Free TVET policy.

“I was Guest of Honour for the 2022 edition of the Apomasu Festival of the chiefs and people of Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region on Saturday,” Dr Bawumia posted on Facebook.
“I expressed delight at plans by the Omanhene, Barima Twereku Ampem lll to establish a Sec/Tech school, and assured the people of Government’s readiness to partner all stakeholders to provide training and employable skills to the youth.”
“Government is retooling existing technical training institutions, and starting the next academic year, the Free TVET policy will run alongside the Free SHS programme for all qualified BECE graduates,” it added.

Government extends Free SHS to cover 139 TVET schools

The government as part of measures to revamp the country’s education system has extended the Free Senior High School education programme to cover some 139 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country.

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum who made this known when he met the press on Sunday (30 January), said this is part of a broad-based plan by the government to make education and training accessible to Ghanaians.

“Based on the direction of the President, 139 T-VET schools have been moved to the Ministry of Education and they are all going to enjoy the Free Senior High School education policy. Any student that goes to any of the 139 T-VET schools will not have to pay any fees as a result,” the minister said.

Adutwum said a TVET Council has been established by his ministry to oversee TVET and skills training policy implementation. He said regional directorates will soon be established having appointed the director-general and a deputy already.

In addition, the minister disclosed that 37 buses and other vehicles have been procured for distribution to the TVET schools as part of efforts to equip them to function.
