A two-storey building at Opera Square in Accra has been destroyed following a fire outbreak on Monday (25 April), firefighters have confirmed.

Several shops in the building have been destroyed including properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis, according to eyewitnesses.

The inferno was first seen at the first floor and then extended to the second floor of the building which contains refrigerators, air conditioners and disposal packs, the state-owned Daily Graphic reported on its website.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, who are at the scene with their fire engines are yet to establish the cause of the fire.
