Fourteen arrested for arson over witchcraft allegation

According to police reports, the suspects set the elderly man’s house ablaze after blaming him for the deaths of two community members. The arrest was made on Thursday (19 June 2025) during an intelligence-led operation.

The East Mamprusi Municipal Police Command has arrested 14 individuals in connection with an arson attack on a 70-year-old man at Sakogu-Gbangu, following accusations of witchcraft.

According to police reports, the suspects set the elderly man’s house ablaze after blaming him for the deaths of two community members. The arrest was made on Thursday (19 June 2025) during an intelligence-led operation.

Among items retrieved from one of the suspects, Foariton Jatika, were a locally manufactured pistol, a single-barrel gun, three AA cartridges, and four BB cartridges.

The 14 suspects arrested include:
Kwabena Kwayamic (Regent of Sakogu-Gbangu), John Jatika, Adam Jatika, Jamong Jatika, Azumah Konkon, Dadob Kambatib, Kwabena Mohammed Monika, Daniel Dajeeb Nanleeb, Samuel Duut Laari, Feikuab Konkon, Kinansua Konkon, Moses Duut Kwabena, Nandi Jatika, and Foariton Jatika.

A police statement said:

“Suspect Kwabena Kwayamic, who is the regent of the community, encouraged and incited the other suspects to set the house of the victim ablaze, including his valuable properties.”

The suspects appeared before the Nalerigu District Court on Friday (20 June 2025), presided over by His Worship Kofi Bediako. Each was granted bail to the tune of GHC20,000 with sureties.

The Ghana Police Service is urging the public to desist from targeting individuals—particularly the elderly—with accusations of witchcraft.

“The police wish to entreat community members to put a stop to the practice of accusing people, especially the aged, of being witches and wizards and visiting violence on them. Those who engage in this practice will be dealt with legally when caught,” the statement added.
