Four MMDCEs approved in Upper West as Wa East rejects nominee

In Jirapa, the confirmation of the President’s nominee, Peter N.N. To-ang, was initially met with resistance. He fell short of the required two-thirds majority in the first round, polling 34 “yes” votes and 18 “no” votes

The confirmation process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Upper West Region is underway, with four out of five nominees securing approval so far.

Assemblies in Jirapa, Sissala East, Wa West, and Wa Municipal endorsed their respective nominees, while the Wa East District Assembly rejected its candidate.

The exercise began with the Jirapa Municipal Assembly, where proceedings were tense. The President’s nominee, Peter N.N. To-ang, fell short of the required two-thirds majority in the first round, polling 34 “yes” votes and 18 “no” votes. The result sparked heated exchanges among stakeholders, prompting a temporary disruption.

Calm was restored after a closed-door mediation led by the Upper West Regional Minister and other senior figures. A second round of voting followed, during which To-ang secured 42 out of 52 votes, representing 80.77%, confirming his appointment.

In his acceptance speech, To-ang expressed appreciation to the assembly members for the confidence reposed in him. He called for unity, stressing the need for collective effort to drive development.

In Sissala East, the confirmation process proceeded without incident. The President’s nominee, Adamu Yakubu, received 30 out of 31 votes cast, an endorsement rate of 96.77%.

Addressing the assembly, Yakubu expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to lead with inclusivity and dedication. “Development is a shared responsibility. I will work closely with all to ensure progress in our municipality,” he said.

The Wa West and Wa Municipal Assemblies also gave unanimous approval to their nominees. Issah Nura Danwana and Richard Wullo received full backing and expressed their gratitude after their confirmations.

However, the process encountered a setback in Wa East District. The nominee, Adamu Shaibu—also the Assembly Member for the Toasa Electoral Area—was overwhelmingly rejected.

Out of 36 votes cast, he secured only 13 “yes” votes and 23 “no” votes, representing a 36.11% approval rate—well below the required two-thirds threshold.

Under local government confirmation rules, any nominee who fails to secure even a simple majority in the first round is automatically disqualified. The President must now either re-nominate Shaibu or present a new candidate for consideration.

Prior to the vote, Shaibu had expressed confidence in his confirmation during a brief address to the house. The outcome, however, fell sharply short of his expectations.

The confirmation process is expected to continue in the remaining districts in the coming days, with political observers watching developments closely.
