Volta Region: NPP regional chairman hailed for Bawumia’s victory

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia polled 29 votes out of the 41 in the region, followed by Ken Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen

A total of 41 delegates in the Volta Region voted in Saturday’s (26 August) special electoral college of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), and voted massively for Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bawumia secured a landslide victory after obtaining 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes across the 17 centres nationwide, to top the pack.

In the Volta Region, the electoral college consists of all 18 constituency chairmen of the party, 17 party executives in the region, two founding members, two ministers, and two national council members.

The ministers who participated are the Volta regional minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, and Minister of Railway Development, (MP) John Peter Amewu.

Some delegates who interacted with Asaase News after the exercise credited the Volta regional chairman of the party, Makafui Kofi Woanya, for Bawumia’s victory.

According to the delegates, including some party members, Woanya was exceptional prior to the exercise, and that led to the economist’s victory in the Volta Region. They described Woanya as a “commander” who has changed “NPP politics” in the region.

“The result is a clear indication that Volta is strongly behind Dr Bawumia. It’s also an indication that the delegates still believe in the Makafui Kofi Woanya-led leadership of the NPP in the Volta Region,” the regional secretary of the party, Pope Yao Yevoo, said.
