Fomena: Court issues bench warrant for NPP protesters

A circuit court at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region has issued a bench warrant for the immediate arrest of some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters who protested and painted the party’s Fomena constituency office in NDC colours.

It comes weeks after protests over the current processes for the party’s internal elections.

The head of prosecution at the Ashanti regional police command, Chief Superintendent Kofi Blagodzi told journalists the culprits have been charged for among others causing unlawful damage.

“At the end of the day if an offence is committed, definitely the police will take the initiative… this is an internal party matter and then the  party has set up an internal alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

“Some prominent people have been appointed by the party to address these issues, so I don’t know why they still refuse to appear before the court, that is why the trial  judge is not happy about their conduct,” he said.

NPP to expel members who repainted party office

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated processes aimed at expelling members of the party who repainted its Fomena office in the Ashanti Region into the colours of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Some aggrieved NPP members on Monday altered the party’s Fomena office’s customary colours of red, white, and blue to red, white, green, and black, the typical colours of the opposition NDC in protest of the party’s decision to hold on with polling station elections in the constituency.

Reacting to the development at a news conference in Accra on Thursday, the general secretary of the NPP John Boadu said the culprits will face the full rigorous of the law.

“In the specific case of disturbance witnessed at Fomena including painting of the party office with NDC colours, the party takes serious view of this gross misconduct, which is not only reprehensible but an affront to the very dignity and existence of the party,” he said.

“Accordingly, the party is taking immediate steps to expel all the persons behind this ungodly act from the party, of course through due process.

“The point must be made that the party has not yet decided on the modalities for holding polling station primaries in Fomena and the other nine constituencies where polling station elections were suspended, owing to one reason or the other,” Boadu said.

The NPP general secretary said the party will soon announce the date for opening of nominations.

“So in Fomena, for instance, the party is yet to take decision on the date of opening nominations, date of vetting, date of publication of vetting results, this will be done and communicated in due course,” he said.
