Flagbearer race: hold aspirants’ debate ahead of 2026 primaries – Opoku Mensah urges NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) should organise a flagbearer debate to allow delegates to compare candidates ahead of the party’s 31 January 2026, primaries, a spokesperson for Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has said.

Yaw Opoku Mensah, speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio, urged party leadership to consider a single platform where all aspirants can present their policies and visions to delegates.

“I have on numerous platforms called that the party should from today start looking at means of bringing all the aspirants on a single platform for a flagbearership debate so that it affords the delegates to understand what these individuals are bringing on board and also allow the delegates to make informed decisions on 31 January 2026,” he told the host Wilberforce Asare.

Mensah noted that while aspirants are visiting constituencies and engaging with party members, a debate would provide additional transparency and deepen the democratic process within the party.

“Just as it is done during presidential elections, these processes deepen our democracy and the very institution that fought for the democracy we are enjoying since 1992,” he added. “Leadership must show the way and look at it from that perspective. It would also minimise the noises within the media space.”

The spokesperson said that delegates and Ghanaians are keenly awaiting Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, one of the party’s declared aspirants, to take part in such a debate.
