#FixTheCountry campaign: Annoh-Dompreh apologises over #fixyourself gaffe

The NPP MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri in response to the viral #FixTheCountry campaign incurred the wrath of Ghanaians having asked them to "fix themselves"

Story Highlights
  • "I would like to apologise for an earlier tweet which failed to convey both seriousness of the times and to capture the essence of what the youth is demanding. Throughout my time in public, I have always known that collective action and responsibility are important."

The MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has apologised for his unsavoury comments against the #FixTheCountry campaign on social media.

In an initial tweet, the lawmaker of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) asked those behind the campaign to “first fix themselves” by outlining 12 things the citizenry have failed to do in contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.

However, he backtracked after coming under severe public backlash and apologised for his comment.

He tweeted: “I would like to apologise for an earlier tweet which failed to convey both seriousness of the times and to capture the essence of what the youth is demanding. Throughout my time in public, I have always known that collective action and responsibility are important.

“However, I also believe that ultimate responsibility lies with the hierarchy of government. This is why as MP, I have always strived to use public office to make life better for my constituents. It is also why I cannot in good conscience endorse any message of fingerpointing while ignoring the climate of holding the arms of government accountable.

“In that spirit, I would urge us all to sustain our efforts to demand accountability. I believe in the leadership of H.E @nakufoaddo and I’m confident that the responsible and responsive leadership he has. We shall succeed in making Ghana a better place.”

Background

Several Ghanaians over the weekend took to Twitter to protest over what they describe bad governance and the high cost of living in the country.

This follows an increase in fuel prices, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices as well as price for data and call.
