Five-member committee begins hearings today on petitions against Chief Justice

President Mahama, after consulting with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case had been established, warranting the formation of the investigative committee in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution

A five-member committee established by President John Dramani Mahama has today (15 May 2025), commenced hearings into three petitions seeking the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, will convene three times a week until its mandate is fulfilled.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, who became Ghana’s third female Chief Justice in June 2023, was suspended on 22 April, 2025, following the submission of the petitions.

President Mahama, after consulting with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case had been established, warranting the formation of the investigative committee in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The specific allegations in the petitions remain confidential in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

However, the process underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding transparency and accountability within the judiciary. The committee’s findings and recommendations will be presented to the President upon the completion of its hearings.

In the interim, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior judge on the Supreme Court, is serving as the acting Chief Justice.
