Five people were killed and 12 others injured on Monday after a collision between a truck and a passenger vehicle at Wakrom Junction near Yamoransa on the Cape Coast–Accra highway, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said.
The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. when a DAF truck carrying 700 bags of rice collided with a Toyota Hiace minibus, according to a GNFS statement.
Rescue teams extricated five people trapped in the wreckage.
Four of them were pronounced dead in hospital, while one remains in critical condition. Another passenger died after being rushed to hospital by bystanders before GNFS arrived, the statement added.
The truck driver and his mate escaped unhurt.
The crash caused heavy traffic on the busy intercity highway as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
Authorities urged motorists to exercise caution on the stretch, which has recorded frequent accidents in recent months.
