Ashanti Region: Vandalised pylons could cost $1.2million, says ECG PRO

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) anticipates most affected areas will have power back by Wednesday (20 March)

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has said the damage caused by some suspected thieves on its high-tension infrastructure within the Ashanti Region could cost GHC15,636,000 (US$1.2 million).

The perpetrators reportedly removed bolts and nuts from the bases of one of the towers, resulting in the collapse of eight others along the vital transmission line stretching from Anwomaso BSP to Akyawkrom Substation in Ejisu.

The vandalism has affected the power supply along the Anwomaso BSP-Akyawkrom Substation line, resulting in power outages in Bekwai, Awiankwanta, Kumawu, Antoakrom, Manso Nkwanta, Jacobu Samfo-Aduam, Ejisu, Onwe, Besease, Asotwe, Abankro, Baworo, and surrounding areas.

ECG anticipates most affected areas will have power back by Wednesday (20 March).

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (20 March), Collins Manu, ECG’s Public Relations Officer, Ashanti Sub-Transmission, said they have reported the incident to the police.

“We have not been able to identify those who did that kind of act. We have reported to the police and they are doing their investigations alongside ours. It is very bad.”

“A cost per repair of a kilometre is $200,000 and our investigations revealed that 6 kilometres of damage has been caused and that is about US$1.2 million, because of someone’s selfish interest the nation is incurring this kind of loss,” Manu said.
