Five Ghanaian MPs in Kenya safe following violent protest

Rumours circulated online suggesting the delegation, comprising five Members of Parliament and an official from Ghana, was caught in the unrest that saw the Kenyan Parliament building set ablaze

Ghana’s high commission in Kenya has assured the public of the safety of a delegation of Ghanaian MPs following violent protests in Nairobi on Tuesday (25 June).

Rumours circulated online suggesting the delegation, comprising five Members of Parliament and an official from Ghana, was caught in the unrest that saw the Kenyan Parliament building set ablaze.

The delegation, led by committee chairman Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi and including ranking member Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Sylvester Tetteh, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Mohammed Taferu, and senior clerk Anita Quartey Papafio, were on a benchmarking visit at the time of the incident.

However, a statement released Wednesday (26 June) and signed by David Sebastian Damoah, director of media relations for the Parliamentary Service, confirmed their safety.

The statement clarified that the MPs were “Immediately escorted and secured in the senate building and finally evacuated to their hotel by officials of the Kenyan Parliament.”

“We appreciate the concern from the general public and wish to indicate that efforts are underway to ensure their safe return to Ghana,” the statement concluded.
