Five die in Suhum road crash

The five passengers died when the driver of a commercial vehicle lost control of the wheel in a tyre burst

Five persons died on the spot when their vehicle somersaulted into a ditch following a tyre burst at Obretema near Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi highway, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the commercial bus with registration number GW 7444-21 lost control of the steering wheel during the tyre burst.

Confirming the incident, the Eastern Regional Police Spokesperson, Sgt Francis Gomado, said the passengers who got injured are being treated at the Suhum Government hospital.

Over 500 killed in road crash

Meanwhile, statistics provided by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, reveal 517 deaths have been recorded between January and February this year.

A further breakdown of the data shows that 2,560 accident cases were recorded from January to February; out of which involved 1,581 commercial vehicles while 974 had to do with motorcycles.

A regional breakdown of road accidents across the country also revealed that the Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of accident-related deaths with 108.

Eastern Region and the Greater Accra Region followed closely with 91 and 89 deaths respectively.
