Green Ghana: La Dade-Kotopon Assembly initiates ‘One Child, One Tree Project’

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly says it wants to inculcate the habit of planting trees among locals

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly has introduced the ‘One Child, One Tree Project’ aimed at sustaining the government’s Green Ghana Project.

The Green Ghana Project, an initiative of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, aimed to plant five million trees in a single day on 11 June 2021.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, the head of Agriculture Department of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly, Emelia Monney, said they want to inculcate the habit of planting trees among locals.

She said key stakeholders including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) will continue to work with the assembly to sustain the project.

“We will provide some fertilizers and pesticides to those who will take care of the plants. The idea is that, whoever picks a seedling to plant will also commit to nurture the plant till it grows,” she said.

Monney said the assembly is also using the initiative to promote climate change adaptation and planting for export and rural development.

“The assembly set itself a target of planting 20,000 coconut plants by end of 2024 and some have been planted already. This year we have started distributing coconut and planting them at selected areas.”
