First-year student dies in University of Ghana swimming pool

The University of Ghana officials say they are liaising with the police to investigate the incident which happened over the weekend

A first-year male student of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon Nicholas Atteh on Saturday (29 January) died while using the campus swimming pool, officials have confirmed.

The university officials say they are liaising with the police to investigate the matter.

“Management of the University of Ghana regrets to announce that a Level 100 male student of the University died around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, while using the swimming pool at the University’s Sports Directorate, in spite of attempts by pool guards to ensure his safety,” the statement issued by Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, the director at the public affairs directorate of the university said.

“The family of the student has been notified and the body has since been deposited at the University Hospital, while further investigations take place.

“Management mourns his tragic loss and sends deepest condolences to his family and friends, on behalf of the entire University community.

“We assure members of the University community and the bereaved family that Management is working together with the Police and the University Health Services to investigate the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) has extended its condolences to the family of the level 100 male student.

The 19-year-old who was a resident of the Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall, on the University of Ghana campus drowned after attempting to swim at a depth of 21 feet in the pool.

Nathaniel Atteh, brother of the deceased, described his brother as generous with ambitions to launch a career as an auditor.
