A huge blaze has gutted several structures at the Techiman Market in the Bono East Region, destroying goods and other valuables.
Fire crews are currently battling the inferno as it tore through the wooden and metallic structures, turning them into a pile of ashes.
Local residents and traders had made frantic attempts to put out the fire with buckets of water and fire extinguishers even before the personnel arrived.
The Ghana Police Service has also deployed its men to maintain law and order.
The inferno, which broke out around 9:15 PM, spread rapidly, overwhelming firefighters who struggled to contain the blaze due to limited resources.
Eyewitnesses expressed frustration over the lack of adequate firefighting equipment.
“I don’t know why a whole metropolitan area like Techiman has just one fire tender. If we had two or three, this fire could have been controlled in the early stages,” lamented a distraught trader.
Another victim, who lost all her investments, tearfully appealed for assistance: “All the money I used to purchase these items was from the bank. Now everything is gone. How will I survive?”
The Bono East Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Naomi Ofori Adubea Sarpong, confirmed that investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the fire. She noted that the congested layout of the market posed significant challenges for firefighters.
“In all, about six fire tenders, including those from Nkoranza, Kintampo, and Wenchi, were deployed to manage the situation,” ACFO II Sarpong explained.
She also cautioned residents to remain vigilant during the dry season and adopt measures to prevent fires in their homes and communities.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
