Fire guts Kejetia Market

Officials are yet to establish the cause of the fire at Kejetia. Traders watching the fire stood helpless and some wailed as their goods were consumed by the fire

Kejetia Market in Kumasi caught fire on Wednesday (15 March 2023), destroying property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Eyewitnesses said most of the big stores and stalls at the busy central market in the Ashanti regional capital had been consumed by the raging fire.

Firefighters have been on the scene trying to douse the blaze, which started around 5pm.

Officials are yet to establish the cause of the fire. Traders who witnessed the incident stood helpless and some wailed as their goods were consumed by the fire.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are also at the scene to help officers from the Ghana Police Service salvage the traders’ wares and to maintain law and order.

A statement issued by the managers of the facility – Kumasi City Markets Ltd – hours after the incident said the fire “resulted in damages to some shops.”

There was no injuries, the statement said.

The market will remain closed until Thursday afternoon, the managers said.
