Film classification submissions will require producer licence from 1 May, says NFA

The new directive is in line with the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 (Act 935), which mandates that all audio-visual content intended for public exhibition in Ghana

Starting 1 May 2025, filmmakers hoping to have their work classified for public viewing will first need to secure a valid Film Producer Licence, the National Film Authority (NFA) has announced.

The new directive is in line with the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 (Act 935), which mandates that all audio-visual content intended for public exhibition in Ghana—whether in cinemas, on television, online, or in other public spaces—must be vetted and classified by the NFA.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary, Kafui Danku-Pitcher, the Authority emphasised that no film, series, documentary, advert, or trailer will be accepted for classification unless the producer possesses the required licence.

“This enforcement is part of a broader effort to inject structure, accountability, and professionalism into Ghana’s evolving film landscape,” the statement read.

The NFA believes the producer licence requirement will not only uphold quality standards but also ensure that content creators are aligned with national classification protocols before reaching the public domain.

The Authority is urging stakeholders to take the directive seriously and begin the licensing process if they have not already done so.
