Governing boards must appoint CEOs for public institutions, says expert

Anane Gyinde believes such an arrangement could greatly reduce conflict of interest situations especially in the public sector

Governing boards in public institutions should be given the mandate to appoint the chief executive officer in line with proper corporate governance practice, Dr Kwaku Anane Gyinde, a corporate governance expert and law lecturer at GIMPA has said.

Anane Gyinde believes such an arrangement could greatly reduce conflict of interest situations, especially in the public sector.

Speaking to Kwaku Nyhira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 November), Anane Gyinde also proposed that all CEOs should be knowledgeable in corporate governance as a prerequisite to their appointment.

“It is a good thing to review our constitution to put a proper governing council in place to properly oversee our country’s state-owned enterprises and avoid unnecessary challenges in the corporate sector.

“If we want state corporations to work effectively, we should have a governing body and the board should appoint the CEO, who will be answerable to the governing board.”

“We have a situation in our country where people are appointed to boards who do not have knowledge or understanding of the space; that is why we see friction between management and members of the board,” he said.
