Steve Harvey suffers third miscue at Miss Universe 2021

The comedian and talk show host suffered similar situations in 2015 and 2019 and blamed the teleprompter in both situations

Long-time host of the Miss Universe pageant, Steve Harvey suffered yet another miscue at this year’s event which was held in Eilat, Israel.

After mentioning Miss South Africa as the second runner-up, Harvey turned to the two remaining contestants representing India and Paraguay and said, “Congratulations Portugal.”

Then he caught himself saying, “They wrote Portugal on the damn sign, trying to play me– they’re trying to get me again. But I’m not going for it this year.”

“Congratulations Paraguay. They had Portugal on the damn sign. I looked dead at it. Y’all saw it. Don’t try to blame this on me this year,” he said.

Awkward stumbles

This is not the first time Steve Harvey has suffered such an awkward situation. During the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, he made a huge gaffe when he mistakenly announced first runner-up Miss Colombia as winner, instead of Miss Philippines, the actual winner.

He went through yet another embarrassing moment in the 2019 competition, when he called winner of national costume, Miss Philippines when it was actually Miss Malaysia. Shweta Sekhon, who was Miss Malaysia at the time, took the microphone from him and calmly said, “Steve, it’s not Philippines, it’s Malaysia.”

He blamed it on the teleprompter in both situations, much like this year’s error.

A night to remember

The event went on without further stumbles and Harvey nailed the most important moment of the night when he officially named Harnaaz Sandhu from India as Miss Universe 2021.

The 21-year-old actress won the title for India 21 years after Lara Dutta won it in 2000.

She beat 79 other contestants, including runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and second runner-up Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane.

Sandhu started out her journey in pageantry at age 17 and has previously won Miss Diva 2021, Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, and also placed in the Top 12 in Femina Miss India, 2019.

The night also marked the first time in over four decades that a Miss Universe Morocco has participated in the pageant and the first time a contestant from the United Arab Emirates has ever competed.
