Eastern Region: Elections must be peaceful, says Gloria Kumawu

The official of Ghana's Parliament says elections are not just about casting votes but a collaborative efforts at choosing leaders peacefully

The acting chief information officer of Parliament Gloria Sarku Kumawu has said that elections serve as the cornerstone of democratic societies providing the citizenry the opportunity to choose leaders and must therefore be peaceful.

Speaking in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital at this year’s International Day of Peace, she said Ghana has become the beacon of hope for Africa by conducting eight successful elections and Ghanaians must not take that for granted.

“This is a remarkable achievement that we must all be proud of and we should all strive to maintain this strive,” she noted.

Kumawu said it is the responsibility of every Ghanaian who is 18 years and above to register to vote and also educate the citizenry on the process of elections.

The International Day of Peace, which was organised by the regional peace secretariat was on the theme: “Action for peace: our ambition for the global goals” saw in attendance chiefs within the Eastern Region, political party representatives, public servants among others.

The chairman of the Eastern Regional Peace Council Mark Boadu said the Global Index report released this year shows that Ghana has lost its enviable spot as the most peaceful country in West Africa to Sierra Leone a trend which is worrying and called on Ghanaians to work hard to restore that pride.

He said in 2022 Ghana was the second most peaceful country in Africa as well as the 40th most peaceful country in the world, but Ghana has now dropped to the fourth place in Africa and the 51st in the world.

For his part, the Eastern regional minister Seth Kwame Acheampong said chieftaincy issues disrupt the peace in the region and therefore called for dialogue.

“We cannot kill ourselves in order to occupy stools, we must engage and dialogue,” he said, adding that without peace there cannot be development and therefore called on political actors to let peace prevail at all time.

The chief executive of Kabaka Foundation and Nkosuohene of Nkwatia, Nana Omari Wadie, was awarded the peace ambassador.
