UGMS: 1982 year group launches US$6,000 academic prize endowment fund

This was part of activities that marked their 40th anniversary celebration under the theme: "40 years of impactful health delivery: the case of the UGMS class of 1982"

The University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) 1982 year group has launched an academic prize endowment fund worth US$6,000 to support the UG dental and medical schools.

This was part of activities that marked their 40th anniversary celebration under the theme: “40 years of impactful health delivery: the case of the UGMS class of 1982”.

The fund began with an amount of US$6,000, US$3,000 for each of the schools which is expected to last for the next 10 years.

The vice-president of the UGMS 1982 year group, Kwadwo Koram revealed that this was a way his year group could contribute their quota to the dental and medical schools even as they motivate students to study well.

“So, along the line we were discussing what we could do and we said, look, last time we constructed the building from scratch, bought the washing machines, the driers and everything.

“This time, we’re old, nobody is going to be able to run around so what’s the best thing to do? We went to the school and they said this particular area they don’t have prizes and we thought it was good to motivate the young ones coming,” Koram said.

“Normally, the school will ask you to do it for five years but we said, look, we will do for 10 years. So we’ve done for dental school and for medical school, the prize is for 10 years. So, at least we’ve given them the money for the next 10 years, they can give that prize. It’s US$300 a year, for 10 years so its three thousand dollars to dental school and three thousand dollars to medical school.”

The Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson described the move by the 1982 year group as fascinating and implored other year groups to also come to their aid.

“It is very welcoming and interesting and especially because we don’t have a number of prizes at the basic sciences level and that’s where they learn a lot of the principles that they will need to practice medicine.”

“So, it is always good to have something that will motivate the students so once they come to school, they look forward to this and especially when we’re going to have one for the dental school and one for the medical school.”

“They all study together but they’re doing distinct courses and it motivates them to go for this and that will be with them as they go to the clinical years. It may come with a textbook, something that may be useful to their study in the latter years. So, it’s quite a welcoming news we’ll encourage other classes and alumni to do so for us”, he said.

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Kwaku Afriyie mentioned that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) should be championed at all levels of education in the country.

“I believe that STEM education which fortunately medicine is part, should be the basis. Previously, everybody went to what Nigeria or elsewhere they will call Grammar Schools. I went to St. Augustine’s, yes, we did science but majority of students opted for arts and businesses.

“I believe that and the Minister of Education of Education now thinks so, the primary, anybody, even anybody who stops school after free SHS, should be so well steeped in sciences that a scientist can converse with that person without the person necessarily specialising in it,” he said.
