Experts warn noise-cancelling headphones may be causing neurological issues in Gen Z
How prolonged use of noise-cancelling headphones may be impacting Gen Z’s neurological health

Noise-cancelling headphones, which are ubiquitous to Gen Z’s lifestyle, may be bringing some hidden neurological risks, experts warn. While these headphones are hailed for their ability to muffle the world outside and improve focus, long-term use may potentially result in sensory processing disorders and other neurological issues.
The Onset of Noise-Cancelling Headphone Usage
Gen Z, being digitally native and technologically inclined, is increasingly using noise-cancelling headphones to create individual “sound bubbles” within ambient noise in environments like offices, public transport, or even at home. Researchers are raising alarms, however, about the effect these devices could have on disrupting the brain’s natural response to outside stimulation.
Dr. Sarah Williams, a neuroscientist at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), explained:: “Our brains are wired to respond to a huge variety of sounds in our environment. Noise-cancelling headphones alter that sensory input, which, in the long term, could lead to sensory adaptation issues or even heightened sensitivity to noise when the headphones are removed.”
Potential Neurological Risks
One of the dangers of prolonged use of noise-cancelling headphones is auditory hypersensitivity, where listeners become more sensitive to surrounding noises. Others have also linked this issue with misophonia, a neurological condition where people experience strong reactions to certain sounds. There are also speculations about effects on spatial perception and balance due to a damaged sense of hearing environmental cues.
Mental Health Implications
Aside from the neurological problems, mental health experts speculate that over-reliance on noise-cancelling headphones might lead to social isolation. According to Dr. Sarah ILLIAMS, a mental health expert, “Gen Z is already in a mental health crisis. Using these headphones to shut out the world entirely could cut off opportunities for positive social interaction, which is necessary for emotional well-being.”
What Can Users Do?
Experts advise moderation when wearing noise-cancelling headphones. Rather than wearing them all day, wearers should step away periodically so their brains can readjust to normal sound patterns. Furthermore, employing ambient sound modes most modern headphones provide this feature—can help balance noise reduction and awareness of one’s surroundings.
Although noise-cancelling headphones have undeniable advantages, it’s essential that Gen Z—and everyone else—takes note of possible neurological and mental health effects. With a balanced strategy, these trendy devices can keep improving our lives without jeopardizing long-term health.
