Experts: Passage of anti-gay bill was politically motivated

The bill, passed on Wednesday (28 February) is set to criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality

A development economist, Dr Frank Bannor has said the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (anti-LGBTQ+) by Parliament was politically motivated.

The bill, passed on Wednesday (28 February) is set to criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (4 March), Bannor said passing the bill into law must go hand in hand with sensitization of Ghanaians on the consequences of the law.

“Irrespective of NPP and NDC, you can do all your politics, and for me at a point, I realise this bill is more politically motivated than any other thing. It is also about which political party actually stands with us against this LGBT story.”

“Looking at the proponents of this bill, that was one of the clear signals that I saw, that, it was not really something that saw to enhance our economic well being, so, there is a problem.”

“One thing about economy is that you can’t make decision based on emotions. If you mix the fact, it is going to have consequences on your unborn child.. You can make a decision that will make you feel good, you smile and go to bed and the next day you wake up and there is no food on your table,”

Speaking on the same programme, financial systems analyst, Kweku Adoboli said “It is an attack on your economic well being…”
