Experience, not certificates, should decide NPP leadership, says Chairman Wontumi

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended his record and questioned scrutiny over his qualifications as he positions himself for a national leadership role.

“All my life I have served the NPP as a regional chairman… if the Ashanti Region is our stronghold and I have served three times as chairman there, why can’t I serve as national chairman?” he said, pushing back against critics.

“People look up to me during elections… why didn’t they ask of my certificate at the time? Now that I am vying… you are now asking.”

Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, a position he has held for multiple terms in the party’s electoral stronghold.

His remarks come as he steps up a nationwide engagement campaign, including a recent tour of the Eastern Region, where he appealed for unity among party executives ahead of the 2028 general elections.

United NPP

Addressing party officials in the Kwahu enclave, he urged members to close ranks despite internal differences, saying more work was needed to consolidate support after recent electoral setbacks.

Boasiako argued that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was mismanaging the economy, creating an opening for the NPP to return to power if it remained cohesive and disciplined.

“Inasmuch as the national party has done well to unite supporters after the presidential election, much more is needed to completely bring everyone on board,” he said.

“With hard work, commitment and zeal, the NPP stands a better position to reclaim power,” Wontumi further stressed.

Bawumia victory

He also formally signalled his ambition to play a leading role in that effort, presenting himself as a unifying figure capable of mobilising the party’s base.

“This is where I present myself as the servant that you can trust to unite everyone to ensure that we work for the victory of the NPP and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2028,” he said.

The NPP is expected to hold internal elections ahead of the next national polls, with early jockeying for positions already exposing tensions within the party over leadership, strategy and credibility.
