Exodus of Ghana’s health professionals “disheartening”, Otumfuo

The overlord of the Ashanti kingdom has expressed concern over the exodus of skilled professionals seeking opportunities abroad

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for a concerted effort to curb brain drain of Ghanaian talents, describing the phenomenon as a “modern form of colonisation.”

Expressing concern over the exodus of skilled professionals seeking opportunities abroad, the traditional ruler stressed the need for strategic measures to retain and harness the potential of the nation’s brightest minds.

Speaking at the 57th graduation ceremony of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday (24 November), Otumfuo said that the impact of talent migration on Ghana’s socio-economic development poses a significant threat to Ghana’s future.

He urged government officials, businesses, and educational institutions to collaborate on creating an environment conducive to growth and innovation.

“It is disheartening to bear witness to a substantial exodus of our health professionals, teachers, and graduates all departing our shores in pursuit of more promising opportunities abroad… It is inherent that if this phenomenon is unchecked, it poses a significant challenge to our future,” he said.

“We must work to turn our country into an enticing and compelling place for our youth. A place where they have unshakable faith to thrive and succeed. I call on the government and all stakeholders to prepare grounds where the youth can harness their potential.

“Creating an environment that fosters entrepreneurship and facilitates job creation. In that way, we can create a prosperous future for ourselves. Let us unite in our efforts, therefore, to confront this challenge head-on for the preservation of our nation,” Otumfuo added.

Illegal mining

“Though the government has achieved some level of success, the menace is still a pervasive problem inflicting severe damage on the environment and our water bodies, resulting in a surge in water-borne diseases and skin infections among our people. I call on all stakeholders to be vigilant and support the government to flush out these illegal miners.”

Honours

The occasion saw Otumfuo, who doubles as Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), confer doctoral degrees on 135 students of the institution.

He also awarded honorary degrees to seven Ghanaians, including the director-general of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Joe Anokye.
