Ex-NPP MP suspects high-level collusion in disappearance of ECG containers

Alex Abban, who is also a lawyer, warned that the financial and social implications are severe, stressing that millions of dollars’ worth of public funds could be lost

A former Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, Alex Abban, has called for a full-scale investigation into the disappearance of containers reportedly holding essential electricity infrastructure, describing the incident as “a shame” and a potential case of high-level collusion.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (5 April), Abban criticised the alleged involvement of officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), political figures, and private actors in the disappearance of the containers, which were intended to support power distribution across underserved communities.

“This is not like milk containers where you can pack a thousand pieces into one small box and make away with it. What we have heard is that these containers, for some reason, have gone missing. I believe strongly that there must be some kind of unholy conversation between GRA officials, some politicians, and people at the top”, he told the host Wilberforce Asare.

He added that reports suggest some of the missing containers were traced to warehouses owned by Chinese companies, where parts were allegedly being melted down and repurposed for export, possibly back to China.

Abban, who is also a lawyer, warned that the financial and social implications are severe, stressing that millions of dollars’ worth of public funds could be lost.

“It is the livelihoods of our people we are talking about,” he said, citing communities still lacking electricity or facing deteriorating power infrastructure.

He urged the country’s security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and prosecute any individuals found culpable, emphasising the need for accountability at all levels.
