The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Ewurabena Aubynn, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Ablekuma North Constituency, seven months after the 7 December general elections.
The announcement was made by the returning officer for the constituency, Joseph Quartey, bringing an end to the prolonged parliamentary vacancy that had left the people of Ablekuma North without representation in Parliament.
The NDC candidate secured a total of 34,090 votes, defeating Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, who gained 33,881 under controversial circumstances. This follows a recent ruling by the Accra High Court, which dismissed an injunction application filed by Nana Akua Afriyie aimed at halting the EC from conducting the elections.
The re-run election, held today across 19 polling stations, was marred by incidents of violence. Reports confirm that a GHOne TV journalist and a former MP and NPP member, Hawa Koomson, were physically assaulted at separate polling centres.
The Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct the re-run faced stiff opposition, particularly from the NPP, which questioned the Commission’s authority and rationale. However, during a press briefing on 10 June 2025, the EC defended its decision, citing the need to use original pink sheets for collation instead of previously accepted scanned versions.
Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Services at the EC, Dr Bossman Eric Asare, explained that the re-run was necessary to ensure a credible and transparent outcome and ultimately to provide the people of Ablekuma North with the parliamentary representation they have lacked since December.
Ablekuma North was one of several constituencies affected by electoral disputes after the 2024 general elections. However, it remained the only one without declared results due to repeated disruptions and violent incidents that obstructed previous collation efforts.
