Bawumia isn’t promising to scrap E-Levy for crowd-pleasing, says technical advisor

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated categorically that he will abolish the tax on electronic financial transaction, E-Levy, if elected President of Ghana.

The technical advisor at the Office of the Vice-President Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini has said the presidential candidate of the NPP, Mahamudu Bawumia, is not promising to scrap E-Levy for crowd-pleasing.

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated categorically that he will abolish the tax on electronic financial transactions, E-Levy, if elected president of Ghana.

The controversial tax was introduced in 2022, and prior to the introduction, Vice-President Bawumia had declared his opposition to levies on electronic financial transactions in an interview.

Delivering his first major address to the nation after his election as the presidential candidate of the NPP,  Vice-President minced no words in declaring his opposition to taxes on electronic financial transactions, stating that he will abolish E-Levy as president.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (8 February), Rohullah Khomeini said Bawumia has always held the view that E-Levy is a disincentive to financial inclusion.

“It is not for crowd-pleasing, these are ideas well thought through by the flagbearer of the NPP. There is that recognition that we have to confront the cost of living issue which every Ghanaian is concerned about…”

“And so, he believes that if we are determined to formalise our economy and transition from an informal way of doing things into the digital space, we must not have a tax system which will discourage people from wanting to participate in the digital space,” he said.
