Everton staged a dramatic return to winning ways with a thrilling 3-2 victory over a faltering Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (19 January).
Under the floodlights at Goodison Park, David Moyes celebrated his first win since resuming managerial duties, injecting a dose of optimism into a club desperate to reverse its fortunes.
The Toffees wasted no time asserting their dominance, surging into a two-goal lead within the opening half-hour.Â
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, ending a frustrating 16-match goal drought, sparked jubilant scenes with a crisp finish that also ended Everton’s barren league run since Boxing Day.
Moments later, Iliman Ndiaye compounded Spurs’ misery, coolly slotting home to double the advantage and send the home fans into raptures.
Just as the first half seemed to be winding down, young Archie Gray inadvertently turned James Tarkowski’s header into his own net during stoppage time, gifting Everton a commanding 3-0 cushion at the break.Â
The three-goal haul marked a turning point for the Toffees, who had failed to score more than once in any of their previous seven league matches.
Spurs, however, were not ready to concede defeat without a fight. Dejan Kulusevski reignited hope for the visitors with a stunning lofted finish midway through the second half.Â
Then, in stoppage time, Richarlison, facing his former club, slid in to net Spurs’ second, setting up a nervy finale for the home side.
Despite Tottenham’s spirited late rally, Everton’s resilience prevailed, and the final whistle confirmed a crucial three points for Moyes’ men.
The victory lifts Everton to 16th place, four points clear of the relegation zone, offering a glimmer of hope in their fight for survival.Â
For Tottenham, the defeat leaves them languishing in 15th, just a point ahead of their rivals, and deepens the gloom over Ange Postecoglou’s troubled campaign.
Spurs’ woes are stark. This marks their 12th Premier League loss of the season, only the sixth time in the club’s history they’ve suffered so many defeats in their opening 22 matches.
While they controlled possession in the second half, their inability to penetrate Everton’s defence highlights a recurring struggle to convert dominance into results.
As Everton fans celebrated a night of long-awaited triumph, Postecoglou is left to grapple with mounting questions about his team’s resilience and consistency.
For now, Goodison Park is alive with hope, while Tottenham’s season teeters on the edge of further disappointment.
