Many stalls were destroyed by fire on Tuesday at Kantamanto Market in the Central Business District of Accra, firefighters have confirmed to Asaaseradio.com.
The incident, according to eyewitnesses, affected most of the stalls near the railway line section of the market.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had a tough time gaining access to the site of the blaze to douse the fire.
No casualties have been recorded, firefighters confirmed.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Police support
Meanwhile, the police said they are providing operational support to the Ghana National Fire Service as they work to put out the fire.
“The police have cordoned off the affected area to enable the fire officers [to] carry out their duty without any obstructions,” an official statement said.
“Officers have also been deployed to prevent possible looting and also direct the movement of persons and vehicles away from the incident scene. Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation are also supporting the exercise.”
The Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, is at the scene with the Inspector General of Police to assess the extent of damage and engage the affected traders. The Chief Fire Officer is also on the scene and co-ordinating the whole exercise.
